Tatiana Delgado Yunquera, with over 16 years’ experience in the gaming industry as a Game Designer.

She has worked at companies such as Rebel Act Studios, Enigma Software Productions, Zinkia, Tequila Works, Gameloft and King, developing games for XBox, PC, Wii, DS and PSP. She also worked on the ARG The Lost Ring for the Beijing Olympic Games, under the direction of Jane McGonigal. In 2017 she co-founded Vertical Robot, a VR game studio where she takes charge of Narrative and Game Design. The studio recently released their second game Red Matter for Oculus Rift.

Now she founded a new studio focused in narrative and puzzle games called Out of the Blue.

Interactions, Narrative and Puzzles in VR Games

Creating games for a new platform such as VR challenges everything we know about Game Design. Throughout the development of Red Matter, we experimented, prototyped and playtested, trying to find our own balance between puzzles and story.

Our focus was to create an experience that enhanced what we felt was unique and new about VR games: direct interaction with the environment, further enhancing the presence of the player in it. We diverged from conventional interactions, reducing the number of buttons to be pressed and using tools instead of direct interaction via virtual hands. The player wields a tool that resembles the Oculus Touch in-game, establishing a seamless connection between the real world and that of the game. Lastly, VR narrative design has its own language and ruleset, still yet to be defined. Within its limitations, we have found a way to tell a story such that the player may take in on a variety of levels.
